It has been a while (a long while) since I took at look at something that way “as seen on TV.” Fortunately after the disaster that was the Moon Shoes some years ago, my daughter learned quite quickly not to trust what you see in television advertisements. (I still sort of feel bad allowing her to learn her lesson that way, but obviously it paid off).
Being a big fan of ice pops, Shaved ice, and all things icy and slushy, she was intrigued when she saw the Slushy Magic Slush Cup advertised. She watched it more and more intently, but wasn’t quite ready to commit, but I could tell it was coming. She would ask, “can it possibly work like that?”
And then she found somebody that had it, and said it really worked, and she really, really, really wanted one. It seemed a bit expensive at $20, and even though they are throwing in a second one free, with only one child in the house, that didn’t seem like much of a bargain. But I finally found it for about $12.95 here, and so we decided to give it a shot.
So, does it work?
It is a little messier than advertised depending on what liquid you put in it, and there isn’t really a lot of room in the cup once you put their “special ice packs” (essentially salt water), but the result is… yes, it works. Depending on how cold the drink is you wish to slush, it takes at least a full minute (many times closer to two) to get it fully “slushy.” But so far it has worked fine with Lemonade, flavored water (Propel), chocolate milk and even Root Beer (carbonated beverages tend to be a bit messy. I suggest always holding the cup over the sink when shaking it up, but ESPECIALLY when using a carbonated beverage… you have been warned).
So far it has been a big success here. The princess likes it, and I like that I don’t have to pull out the blender to make a slushy. If you use it with juice products (Orange, Apple, etc), it works really well, they get a treat, and something nutritious at the same time… win-win as I see it, and much better than any ice pops you will get in a store.
Now, it is true that you can make the “Magic Cubes” yourself if you like. There are instructions and even some You Tube videos on the subject. But it will take some trial and error to get everything just so, and for the $12 or so, I thought it was worth it to not have to spend the time trying to make a salty ice pouch that wasn’t going to wind up leaking into the drink. (The Shaker, 3 Magic Cubes, a Spoon-Straw and drink mix guide come in the box.)
I have read some mixed reviews about ordering from the official slushy magic website, but don’t know if there is any truth to it. I picked it up on Amazon (see link above), but it can also be found in some Kmarts, Wal-Marts, etc and I have seen it in a few kiosks that specialize in selling “as seen on TV” type products.

This one goes squarely into the category of parent tested and kid approved.
