Young Adult books. Sigh. It is something new in my life thanks to my princess who now is rocking the age of 12 and is far closer to a teenager than the baby I still tend to see her as. But this is not about me… or my daughter, it is about a book written by up and coming (I think) author J. Sterling. It is her debut novel In Dreams (The Dream Series #1).
Now, before I get into this let me say a couple of things up front. First, for the guys… This is a Chick Flick in book form. Period. If you are not apt to like Lifetime or We television, then you might as well stop now, this is not for you. Second, this is a Young Adult novel in every sense of the word. Sentence structure, vocabulary and even the thought processes as they are laid out in the book are designed for a younger reader. So, if you are expecting the complete works of William Shakespeare…. then this is probably not for you. As a matter of fact, if you look at the reviews on Amazon (4.5 stars) or Good Reads (3.5 stars), there are mainly two complaints about this book. The first being that there were some grammatical mistakes, but these have since been fixed and second, complaints about simple reading and choppy sentences. Well this isn’t a “Mommy Porn” book and isn’t targeted at that audience, so you don’t get, “His heaving chest was barely contained by the iridescent Egyptian cotton fibers of his flowing shirt which laid flowingly across his gaberdine slacks and framed the bulge of his manhood which was clearly outlined contrasting against the way they draped across his many thighs.” or other such nonsense.
It is written in a way that a Young Adult can understand… or probably more to point… they way they think. I give the author a lot of credit. It takes a lot of work and soul searching once you get beyond those years, to actually think and speak in that manner, and she manages to execute it quite well. While the story is not something I would normally read, much in the way I have learned to appreciate watching shows like Victorious and iCarly with my daughter, I can certainly appreciate it for what it is, and that is an easy quick read that can really get your mind to wander.
Rather than trying to retell this story and risking giving away a plot, or not doing it justice, here is how the book is how J. Sterling herself describes it:
When Katherine Johns starts dreaming about a boy she doesn’t know, her college roommate Taylor is determined to find him. Convinced he must exist, Taylor is relentless… until she finds out exactly WHO the mysterious stranger really is.
The realization rocks the girls to their core and sends them down a path of unimaginable heartbreak as they learn to navigate their new reality.
Follow Katherine & Taylor’s journey through love, friendship and tragedy in the first book of this emotionally captivating series.
As I said, earlier… very Lifetime… or perhaps more appropriately, very Disney Channel Original Movie (I could totally see Selena Gomez as Katherine), and if that is your cup of tea, then this a good book for you, or that young (female) adult you have in your home.
Even better, the book in Kindle form costs a whopping .99 cents, and has been discounted down to FREE several times. If however, you are still hooked on paper, it is available for $10.99 here.
The Contest is now OVER.
Congratulations to Liz who will be receiving an autographed copy of In Dreams.
But WAIT there’s more.
(I always wanted a reason to say that… it is so Ron Popeil… anybody that remembers TV ads for Ronco should understand)
I purchased two copies of In Dreams which Ms. Sterling was kind enough to autograph for me. One has been confiscated by my daughter and sits along side Hunger Games and several other books in her “Big Girl Library.” The other I am giving away.
